Amazon has launched a new
“one-click to quit the union” tool,
and they’re relentlessly pushing it to every worker in their Coventry warehouse.
The QR code for the tool is displayed on each table in the canteen, in every meeting and training room, in every hallway, and every toilet, as well as shown every five minutes of the working day in screens at the centre of the warehouse.
If a worker scans the QR code and clicks the link, Amazon’s software automatically generates…

in a beautiful place out in the country: yo la tengo's tour closer last night at the haw river ballroom near chapel hill. 2 glowing sets, "night falls on hoboken" to close the quiet-ish half, perhaps the furthest-out "from a motel 6" i've yet caught (into "flying lesson"!), & a lou reed birthday encore (naturally featuring the never-fully-released outtake "guess i'm falling in love").

I wish I knew why backup connectivity that Just Worked for months broke only one client host following an OS update and concomitant reboots on the evil backup server from hell. Also, why did it ever work, i.e. why was my ugly hack that makes it work NOW not needed 2 weeks ago?
There are a mess of vlans and netmasks involved. Many physical interfaces. And I will probably find the answer somewhere in the update notes for

Wait. Magic isn't real? 😂
Seriously, did anyone really think this was some kind of AI or "disruptive tech"?
I've always suspected this was more Flinstones technology than modern innovation.
"Though it seemed completely automated, Just Walk Out relied on more than 1,000 people in India watching and labeling videos to ensure accurate checkouts. The cashiers were simply moved off-site, and they watched you as you shopped."

Screenshot of the cartoon The Flinstones. It shows Wilma looking into a hole, as viewed from inside the hole, which is a box like an old camera. We see a bird drawing her image.

#Piła Kalina: 2017 and today.
Honestly, I have mixed feelings. As I've said before, even if you knew where to look for the train stop, you could have easily gone the wrong way and ended up on the hill above the platform. Today, it's clearly visible, with easy access routes.
But it has lost all the magic. You no longer reach the platform by walking the thin dirt path between the thick green trees.
